American Red Cross volunteer Winnie Romeril returned from Haiti this past weekend after spending two weeks working on relief efforts there. Winnie has been instrumental in providing information about her experiences to us for sharing on this blog. On Monday, she spoke at a round table briefing at our National Headquarters. Here are some descriptions of the work she took part of, and her impressions upon leaving the country.

The Red Cross firmly believes that we must work with the community to figure out their needs. One example is how our water purification teams talk to community leaders to figure out what’s going on. Outside Port-au-Prince in smaller cities and villages, there are many wells unscathed by the earthquake– so we test them to let people know if the water is safe. In communities where it’s not safe, we have set up water distribution points.

There is an incredible resiliency in the Haitian people. Since everyone has been affected by the earthquake, this has created a powerful sense of unity. This resiliency is particularly prevalent among children, many of whom continue to laugh and play despite the widespread devastation. The market economy has also started coming back with some banks, gas stations and stores now open. Food and other materials are coming in from the unaffected countryside. Relatives who live abroad are sending in money.

How well would we like to build back Haiti? We could bring them back to the standards they were at before the earthquake, but is that good enough? It’s not. Haiti unfortunately will have more disasters. We need to help them prepare for future events with better construction that can withstand hurricanes and earthquakes. We know how to do this: we’ve done it in Pakistan, Peru, and China, and we can do it in Haiti. For every dollar we invest in disaster preparedness, we save $4-8 in disaster response. The Haitians are leading the way in rebuilding their lives.

We need to support Haitians to be stronger for the future.

Below are two video updates from American Red Cross Emergency Response Unit team members on the ground in Haiti. Watch to get a sense of how distribution at camp sites is assessed and carried out.

The Red Cross is focusing on three areas – food, clean drinking water and other relief items such as hygiene kits, blankets, tarps, sleeping mats, tents and water containers. The relief items are helping more than 10,000 families (50,000 people) to date – with plans to increase this number. About 79 percent of the funds spent or committed by the American Red Cross have been for food and water; 18 percent have been for shelter; and the rest have been for health and family services.

On Saturday, Jan. 23, the Charlotte Bobcats, NASCAR Foundation and the American Red Cross worked together to raise nearly $10,000 for Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti.

Volunteers from the organizations - including more than a dozen from the Red Cross - collected money outside Time Warner Cable Arena prior to the Charlotte Bobcats vs. Orlando Magic game. Volunteers also staffed two tables inside the arena where spectators could make donations.

During the game, there were several reminders to text “HAITI” to 90999 to make a $10 donation. There was also a contest at halftime, which raised $2,500 for relief efforts. The Bobcats and NASCAR Foundation matched those proceeds, bringing the total to $5,000 from the halftime contest alone!

When you add that to the total amount raised from collecting donations outside, the efforts Saturday brought in nearly $10,000 for Red Cross response in Haiti.

Thank you to everyone who helped by either volunteering or making a donation.

Red Cross Transportation Services provide residents living in Mecklenburg and South Iredell counties free transportation to and from critical medical appointments. There were 17,145 rides provided by more than 70 volunteers last year.

Coy Powell, a Red Cross volunteer driver for more than four years, said one of the most important qualities in a driver is being flexible. Powell said some people may complain and want no assistance, while others are excited to see him. He said it is their choice to receive assistance. “We assist where we can; we do not force ourselves.”

Powell said his favorite element about this service is meeting different people. He said he enjoys to hear their life experiences, where they have been and what they have done. While volunteering at the Red Cross, Powell met a client that had coached baseball at his former high school when he had attended.

While on his route Thursday, Jan. 28, Powell picked up Lula Stewart, who moved to Charlotte in 1992. Stewart has been using this service once a month for more than two years. She said she enjoys the atmosphere, company and a pleasant drive with conversation. Stewart’s most memorable moment was her second ride with the Red Cross. No volunteer drivers were available to pick her up from her doctor visit, so Betty Burton, the scheduling coordinator, picked her up. Stewart said she was amazed at how courteous Burton was.

The second client for Powell was Christine Leach, who has been in Charlotte since 1963. Leach has been using this service twice a week for four or five years. She said the drivers are very nice to her, and they always help her in and out of the car. Leach said, “I could not ask for a better ride.”

The third client for Powell was Horace Matthews, who has been in Charlotte since 1962. Matthews has been using this service twice a week for five years. He said he likes the drivers, who are on time no matter what. Matthews said laughing, “They need to be paid!”

At a celebratory breakfast on Friday, Jan. 15, on the anniversary of US Airways Flight 1549’s dramatic emergency landing on the icy Hudson River on January 15, 2009, passengers and crew members expressed their thanks to the American Red Cross for the help and emotional support they received after the landing. The breakfast, hosted by Mutual of America at its Park Avenue headquarters in Manhattan, was attended by 50 of the 155 passengers, the plane’s crew of 5, led by Captain Chesley B. Sullenberger III, and 75 guests, including New York State Governor David Paterson and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Dozens of representatives from local and national TV, radio and newspapers were also on hand to cover the event.

The morning’s many speakers praised the Red Cross for its support on January 15, 2009, and its work with people in need throughout the year. Flight 1549 passenger, Theresa Leahy, lauded the volunteers and staff from the American Red Cross in Greater New York and the Red Cross of Northern New Jersey. She said, “This is our big hug to thank you.” Captain Sullenberger recalled the day of the landing, “It felt as if all of New York and New Jersey was out to embrace us—and when they did embrace us, it was with blankets from the Red Cross.”

U.S. Airways Flight 1549 was en route to Charlotte, North Caroline, from New York’s La Guardia Airport on January 15, 2009, when it struck a flock of geese which disabled the aircraft and forced it to land on the river. Everyone on board safely evacuated the plane. Minutes later, volunteers and employees from the American Red Cross in Greater New York were on the scene at the NY Piers, where many passengers were ferried by rescue boats; relief workers from the northern New Jersey Red Cross assisted passengers who were ferried to the New Jersey side of the river. Red Cross provided hot beverages, socks, sweat suits, warm blankets, mental-health counseling and more to passengers and crew members.

Jeffrey Skiles, Flight 1549’s co-pilot, praised the organization’s volunteers and employees as heroes for their help that day, and presented the Red Cross with a personal check for $5,000. NYC Bank of America President, Jeff Barker, and Senior Vice President of Media at Bank of America, Pam Seagle, who was a passenger on Flight 1549, also presented the Red Cross with a check, for $21,549—one thousand dollars for each of the 20 Bank of America associates who were on Flight 1549, plus an extra, symbolic, $1,549.

Governor Paterson, Mayor Bloomberg, US Airways CEO & Chairman of Doug Parker, NY Red Cross Chairman of the Board Ira Millstein, NY Red Cross Chairman Emeritus William Gray, and NY Red Cross CEO Theresa Bischoff also spoke at the event. Ms. Bischoff thanked Flight 1549’s passengers and crew “for the opportunity to thank our Greater New York responders and staff.”

One of the last to address the attendees, passenger Clay Presley, (“Seat 15D”), draped a Red Cross blanket across his shoulders and said, “We were wet, cold and emotionally exhausted. The Red Cross provided real emotional support when we needed it.” He went on to ask for donations to the organization for its local and international relief efforts, in particular, its humanitarian response to the earthquake in Haiti earlier his week

This post written by American Red Cross volunteer in Haiti Winnie Romeril

After a tiring day of travel from Santo Domingo, I arrived at the American Red Cross office. The structure is visibly unstable but the open air office is abuzz with activity. All salvageable furniture is on the lawn, the front gates are open, and the street is orderly. It’s friendly, full of humanity. Red Cross flags hang on the walls.

In one area, two young girls wearing bright white Haitian Red Cross smocks are gently and persistently cleaning a wound beneath an old woman’s white hair. A gash on her arm is ugly and yellow, badly infected from an open fracture. They attend to her with warm smiles and easy banter, as if this situation is the most natural thing in the world. The Red Cross will take her by car to a hospital for further treatment.

Other volunteers are restocking large first aid kits with supplies that just arrived. The kits are for the first aid posts which the Red Cross has set up in the camps. Each is staffed with a doctor, a nurse and two first aiders.

On the other side of the yard, our American Red Cross head of office Matt Marek holds a team meeting. The sunset is spectacular, with the mountains in shadow and the sea glowing below. In the shadows, lie neighborhoods of rubble.

The Red Cross team reviews supplies, logistics and personnel for tomorrow. They call over four youth and announce they are now the new leadership who will head up teams tomorrow. Their groups of volunteers will comb the worst hit neighborhoods, street by street, preaching safe hygiene practices and encouraging people to come to the Red Cross first aid posts for triage, treatment and transfer if necessary.

The young leaders take over the meeting. Matt signals to me and we walk away, down the hill. About 20 feet away, the office compound wall no longer stands. We climb over the rubble into an area smaller than a baseball field where one hundred and forty-six families (over 700 people) now live. Tarps of every color are strung together over the entire space, save a small walkway around the perimeter. Red Cross flags hang high on the remaining wall to show people where to come for help.

We walk past a laughing group of children bathing with water from buckets. Matt takes me to the edge of the hill to where the land drops off precipitously. In all directions, a cascade of rubble runs like a river of rocks through every neighborhood on the sides of these mountains. We turn back toward the camp, greeting everyone with bon soir, ca va?

Matt lifts the edge of the curtain of rope and tarps and strolls in. We bend low and make our way down one of the rows under the communal plastic “roof.” We smile and acknowledge each family. Matt pauses and chats in Creole with one woman who is watching over two teenage girls in wheelchairs. One is fully bandaged toes to hips while the other has dressings around her head.

We head to the end of the row and buy some coconut cookies from a woman operating a kiosk out of her tent. Matt bargains fiercely for the cookies, barely suppressing a smile. Then once they agree on a price he pretends not to pay her and everyone nearby laughs.

The signs of resilience are encouraging. Tomorrow relief distributions will begin in this camp. But it is only the beginning of a long recovery process that will certainly take years.
