01.29.2009 American Red Cross honors young blood donation advocate

“Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” is rebuilding the home of a 14-year-old girl from Tucson, Ariz., who suffers from a life-threatening blood disease.  Lizzie Bell was born with a rare blood condition that requires her to receive blood transfusions every few weeks. Lizzie and her mother have made it their mission to raise awareness about the on-going need for blood.

Each day in the American Red Cross Carolinas Blood Services Region, 1,600 blood products are needed to help patients suffering from trauma, illnesses and injuries.  This Saturday, Jan. 31, the American Red Cross is honoring young hero Lizzie Bell by dedicating blood drives across the United States in her name.  While the blood collected on this day will not go to Lizzie directly, it will help save the lives of thousands of patients.

“The American Red Cross is grateful to ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’ and the Bell family for shining a spotlight on the importance of on-going blood donation, said Robert F. Fechner, chief executive officer of the Carolinas Blood Services. “We rely on the continuing dedication of our proud blood donors and those whose lives were changed by blood donation to help inspire those around them to join this cause and make blood donation a regular part of their lives.”

Please join us to honor Lizzie on Saturday, Jan. 31:

• From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the American Red Cross donation site, 2425 Park Road, Charlotte, NC, 28203
• From 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Calhoun building in Huntersville Business Park, 9800 Kincey Ave., Huntersville, NC, 28078

For more information or to make an appointment to give blood, call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or visit redcrossblood.org.

The episode airs from 8-9 p.m. SUNDAY, MARCH 22, on the ABC Television Network.
