04.28.2009 American Red Cross offers Pandemic Preparedness course

As reports of human swine flu cases surface, many people in our nation are taking measures to ensure they are protected. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have not raised the pandemic threat level, the Red Cross would like to prepare our communities.

Two years ago, the Greater Carolinas Chapter of the American Red Cross developed an online Pandemic Preparedness course. By taking this course, community members can learn how to prevent the spread of disease, how to be ready for emergencies related to a pandemic and how to care for someone who is sick.

The course is now being offered at a discounted rate of $10 for anyone interested in learning how they can keep themselves and their families safe should this situation worsen.

“We understand that accessibility to information in a time like this is important,” said Pamela Jefsen, CEO of the Greater Carolinas Chapter. “At the Red Cross, we make sure our communities have the information they need to be prepared.”

To take the course, simply click here. Find the course named “Pandemic Preparedness” and register.

In addition to offering the course, the American Red Cross is also:

• Making our seasonal flu checklist available.

• Monitoring the developing situation with this new strain of human swine flu and is in close contact with federal and state officials, including the CDC and the Department of Homeland Security;

• Encouraging families, businesses and organizations to review and update their preparedness plans;

• Encouraging people to follow common sense basic public health practices, such as covering your cough/sneeze with a tissue, frequent hand-washing, visiting a doctor for flu-like symptoms and staying home when sick;

• Working with government officials on the swine flu issue and stand ready to help as appropriate.  The American Red Cross is committed to maintaining the blood supply for the public, to educating the public on preparedness and safety, and to ensuring that we can continue to provide disaster services to those in need.
