09.28.2010 Blood donors can “fly into the holidays”
The weather is changing and the holidays are quickly approaching. One thing that remains the same is the constant need for blood. Present to donate with the American Red Cross, and take flight! The Red Cross is asking donors to donate blood or platelets and they can “Fly Into The Holidays With Delta!”
The campaign, which runs from October 1 to December 31, 2010, gives each person who presents to donate blood or platelets with the Red Cross an opportunity to enter a drawing for the chance to win one of two pairs of roundtrip Delta Air Lines domestic tickets.
“The Red Cross is grateful to Delta for helping us find a unique way to say thank you to blood donors,” stated Joyce H. Brendel, CEO, American Red Cross Carolinas Blood Services Region. “Patients in area hospitals depend on the generosity of blood donors every day. We cannot adequately express the daily need for blood donors.”
In Mecklenburg and Iredell counties, there are two donor centers, as well as plenty of upcoming blood drives:

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. The American Red Cross Carolinas Blood Services Region provides lifesaving blood to patients in 103 hospitals. Approximately 1,600 people need to give blood or platelets each week day to meet hospital demand.
Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Most healthy people age 17 and older, or 16 with parental consent, who weigh at least 110 pounds, are eligible to donate blood and platelets. Donors who are 18 and younger must also meet specific height and weight requirements.
