06.22.2009 Camp Save-a-Life encourages summer blood donations

The American Red Cross will help blood and platelet donors relive the fun of summer camp with Camp Save A Life in July. The 15-day program, slated for July 1-15, gives donors an opportunity to save lives by donating much-needed blood for local patients during the critical summer season.

Co-sponsored by Dick’s Sporting Goods, the special initiative provides blood and platelet donors numerous opportunities to win prizes.

All presenting donors can enter a drawing for one of three $1,000 gas cards and will receive a Red Cross camp T-shirt and Dick’s Sporting Goods discount coupons.  Presenting donors at the donor centers will also have the opportunity to win one of 22 $100 gift cards from Dick’s Sporting Goods.

“Camp Save A Life is a great way for blood donors to relive their summer camp memories while helping save lives during a critical time of year,” commented Robert F. Fechner, chief executive officer of the Carolinas Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross.

Traditionally, blood donations decrease in the summer due to vacations, holidays and summer schedules for schools and colleges.  Unfortunately, the need for blood never goes away.

The Carolinas Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross provides lifesaving blood to 103 hospitals and must have 1,600 people give blood and platelets each weekday to meet hospital demand. Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Platelets can be given safely every two weeks, up to 24 times a year. Most healthy people age 17 and older (16 with parental consent) who weigh at least 110 pounds, are eligible to donate blood and platelets.

For more information or to schedule an appointment to donate, please call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (448-3543) (OR INSERT NUMBER) or visit redcrossblood.org.
