10.21.2008 Greater Carolinas Chapter responds to home fires

The Greater Carolinas Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to two apartment fires Monday night in the Charlotte area. The Charlotte Fire Department also responded to both fires, which were ruled accidental kitchen fires and caused no injuries.
The Red Cross Disaster Action Team responded to an incident involving a family of four at 10:20 p.m. on Burkland Drive in Charlotte. The family, consisting of one adult and three children, was displaced as a result the fire, which caused substantial damage to their home. The Red Cross team assisted the family by providing food and groceries as well as temporary sheltering at a local hotel.
About an hour later, the Disaster Action Team swiftly traveled to assist a family of six displaced by a fire at 11:40 p.m. on Providence Road in Charlotte. The Red Cross team assisted the adult and five children by providing food and groceries and temporary sheltering at a local hotel.
Disaster service responders receive free, specialized Red Cross training to prepare them to execute vital tasks in field operations, disaster assessment, mass care, sheltering and mental health operations.
In the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area, the most common disaster to which the Red Cross responds is house and apartment fires. Disaster Action Teams work closely with the fire department to assist disaster clients in a timely and efficient manner while assuring clients’ basic needs are met.
