07.06.2011 Local volunteers head to North Dakota to assist with flood response

As some Minot, N. Dak., residents are allowed back into neighborhoods where the water has receded, the American Red Cross is deploying crews to offer food, water and other supplies to help those returning home.

Locally, the Red Cross already has deployed three volunteers to North Dakota to assist in the Red Cross relief efforts:

  • Annie Bynum, from Gaston County, working in Logistics as a Supply Supervisor
  • Elizabeth Henderson, from Charlotte, working in Health Services
  • Bertha Watkins, from Gaston County, working in Staff Services
  • Margaret Royster, from Gaston County, will leave Charlotte today to head to Minot to serve as a caseworker.

The Red Cross continues to operate a shelter at the Minot State University Dome, where about 171 people remain, and also is supporting two other community shelters. Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicles also continue to bring food and water to areas where people displaced by the flood are living in campers and tents, and to emergency response workers. Along with water and a sandwich or snack, the Red Cross provides emotional support.

In the coming days, the Red Cross will be distributing clean up kits and also providing other assistance.

To date, the Red Cross in North Dakota has provided:

  • 2,868 overnight shelter stays
  • 17,329 meals and 70,063 snacks.
  • Emotional support to 1,089 people and health services to 852 people
  • Deployed more than 385 volunteers locally and from across the country to support the operation

Those who want to help the people affected by these disasters, as well as countless crises at home and around the world, can make a donation to support American Red Cross Disaster Relief. Their gift will enable the Red Cross to prepare for and provide shelter, food, emotional support and other disaster assistance.
