Flood waters are receding in Tennessee, Kentucky and Mississippi, and the Red Cross continues to provide people with a safe place to stay and is assessing the best way to help those whose homes have been damaged.

One way to help is to provide food. Vicki Campbell, from Mooresville, and Steve Lord, from Statesville, will drive the Red Cross ERV to Nashville, Tenn., where they will serve meals and provide relief items to those affected by the floods.

Campbell has deployed with Red Cross disaster relief efforts several times, including her first response in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Campbell said that in times of disaster, volunteering with the Red Cross is one of the best ways people can help.

“The Red Cross goes deep into those areas where people really need the assistance and have limited access to resources,” Campbell said. “It’s amazing to see how grateful people are when you give them a meal. You know you’re making a difference.”

Lord, who has been volunteering with the Red Cross for 10 years, deployed to Southwest Florida during Hurricane Charley in 2004. He said when he heard about the floods, he knew he should go.

“It’s the right thing to do – it’s Americans helping Americans,” he said.
