Why Give?

My name is Mary Milam and I am Director of Community Services for the Union County Chapter of the American Red Cross. 

As the Blood Program Supervisor, I am constantly reinforcing the need for healthy adults to give blood.  I often use statistical data to illustrate the great need but I also have a compelling personal story that I would like to share with you. 

As a leukemia patient my husband received countless transfusions of platelets and whole blood provided by the American Red Cross.  Although the disease ultimately claimed his life, my husband and our family were blessed with several years that included the joy of being present at the birth of our twin grandchildren.

That precious moment and many others would not have been possible without those who shared the gift of donating their life-saving blood. You only have to look at the pictures for the answer to the question … Why give?
